Why now might be the time to rise to the challenge of becoming the next National Chair of the Adult PSW Network?

Back in early 2018 a fellow PSW suggested I’d make a good Chair for the national network, and my initial thought was I couldn’t possibly find the time, have the confidence or be good at it!  As we approach the election of new Chairs and Vice Chairs, I just want to encourage people to step up and take the challenge, as I did three years ago.  

Yes, it does take up more of your time, but you can work it so you get the right support. Not only will Research in Practice support you but it’s great for local and mental health trusts to have the Chair of the network in their organisation. As ADASS members you also have access to national policy information so you feel informed and connected to the wider leadership nationally across adult social care. I recall telling my director I was thinking about doing the role and he was immediately supportive.  

If it’s confidence that’s holding you back from doing it – this really was my biggest challenge. I was a nervous public speaker and while I was confident in my abilities as a senior manager and social worker, the idea of the role can seem daunting. But it really wasn’t. It’s interesting, stimulating and is a role that really influences and makes a difference. The PSW network is also wonderfully supportive: my regional PSW colleagues helped me every step of the way by acting as sounding boards, sharing their knowledge and giving me the odd push when I needed it. I was soon chairing conferences and speaking at national events – a steep learning curve but one I will always be grateful for.  

It really was one of the best roles, and sharing it with Beverley and Tricia made it all the more special. If I hadn’t had that experience, I would never have applied for the Chief Social Worker role and, with fellow former PSW network Chair, Mark Harvey, was able to bring a lot of experience and knowledge to DHSC. I know how much they now value the PSW network. 

Sometimes it just takes a bit of courage to go for something and who knows what it might lead to!
