Child-centred communication in child protection

Developing effective communication skills to improve the quality of interactions with children is an important component of frontline practice. The impact of failing to do this has been well documented through various reports into child deaths and serious harm.

The workshop will consider the skills and approaches that practitioners can use to enable them to communicate effectively with children.

This session will:

• Introduce the Dynamic Maturational Model (DMM) to explore the coping strategies children develop and how to make meaning of them to understand children's behaviour and inform assessments.
• Discuss the barriers and enablers to meaningful communication with children.
• Consider communication skills essential for impactful direct interactions with children.

This interactive workshop will provide opportunities for delegates to reflect and practice some of the skills and approaches introduced.
